Dr. Leon Marvell is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University, Australia. He is the author of Transfigured Light: Science, Philosophy and the Hermetic Imaginary. Recently he has written on Surrealism and alchemy for the volume Alchemical Traditions edited by Aaron Cheak; on André Masson and George Bataille’s image of the acephalic monster and the occult tradition for Leonardo Electronic Almanac: Interference; on Murnau’s Nosferatu and Barker’s Hellraiser for Abraxas Special Edition: Luminous Screen, edited by Jack Sargeant.

Leon Marvell, PhD

Dr. Leon Marvell is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University, Australia. He is the author of Transfigured Light: Science, Philosophy and the Hermetic Imaginary. Recently he has written on Surrealism and alchemy for the volume Alchemical Traditions edited by Aaron Cheak; on André Masson and George Bataille’s image of the acephalic monster and the occult tradition for Leonardo Electronic Almanac: Interference; on Murnau’s Nosferatu and Barker’s Hellraiser for Abraxas Special Edition: Luminous Screen, edited by Jack Sargeant. He has also recently co-edited a collection of essays for the American Film Institute, Endangering Science Fiction Film. Dr. Marvell has been a researcher in the fields of European and Eastern esotericism and the history of science for the past thirty years. Simultaneously he has pursued research interests in art history and the history of the cinema. He has lived and lectured in China, Cyprus and Australia. In addition to his academic career he has produced creative work in film, radio and the theatre.

Dr. Marvell serves in a peer-review and advisory capacity for Rubedo Press.
